UGC usage rights explained

Organic vs paid usage, durations, exclusivity and whitelisting in plain English, with a checklist to use before you agree to a deal.
Ownership vs usage
In most UGC deals you keep ownership of the content you create and the brand receives permission to use it in specific ways for a specific time. Those permissions are the usage rights, and they should be written into your deal.
Organic vs paid usage
Organic usage means the brand posts your content on its own pages, website or emails without paying to promote it. Paid usage means the content runs in ads. Paid usage is typically worth more because it reaches more people and drives sales directly.
Duration and exclusivity
Duration is how long the brand can use the content, such as 30 days, 90 days or 12 months. Exclusivity means you agree not to work with competing brands for a period, which limits your other income and should be priced accordingly.
Whitelisting
Whitelisting (sometimes called creator licensing) lets the brand run ads through your social account so they appear under your name. It should always be agreed explicitly, for a set time, and paid separately.
FAQ
Do I lose ownership of my UGC?
Usually not. You typically keep ownership and grant the brand the usage rights written in your deal.
What's the difference between organic and paid usage?
Organic is posting on the brand's own channels; paid is using your content in ads.
